Food For Thought: The History of the Pocket PC

After a lot of research, I was able to learn that Microsoft unveiled the first Pocket PC back in February of 2000 though it had been announced previously by Bill Gates in January. Pocket PC runs a version of Windows, and at that time, it ran Windows CE. The first Pocket PC prototype was produced by Casio, and at the time it came out, Microsoft was hoping to use the Pocket PC to compete with 3Com's Palm series. Back then, no one new how successful the Pocket PC would be, but it has since gained a lot of popularity.

The Pocket PC started out with the Windows CE operating system. There were several versions of this operating system before the Windows Mobile system came out in 2002. I am not sure how related the new system is to the old system. Since Windows Mobile came out, several versions have been released. There is Windows Mobile 2003, Windows Mobile 2003 Second edition, and the very popular Windows Mobile 5.0 released May 9, 2005. Rumor has it that a new version could be released this year.
